Most Word processors have their own word counters, then you can just update your word count in the honor system box. Their counter counts pretty much the way Word does as far as I can tell. For most programs there should be a 'Word Count' Option under the "Tools" menu. Even Notepad has it so the really basic programs should have it as well. So just use whatever program you're using to type it into the computer.

Yeah, I have WordPerfect as well. I used to have MSW, but then I switched computers. I've gotten used to Wordperfect, but I thought that MSW was way easier.

Microsoft builds to the lowest common denominator. Is this good? Is this bad? Not my call. It is.

The difficult thing about this competition is that it's not in a standard page size, which makes your pages longer, which makes everything out of touch. Here are my stats:
107621 characters 23892 words 1845 sentences 2805 lines 483 paragraphs Average word length: 5 Average words per sentence: 13 Maximum words per sentence: 60 Page under my margins: 75.
And no worries about me being a psycho counter. I didn't like count every single character and look for the longest sentence or anything.

I'm in the middle of a set of 1 act performances that are ending Friday, but it's no big production. Just a local theater company. We're performing Emotional Baggage, Down By the Bay, and my cast is performing Mmmbeth. What a silly spoof. However, I'm falling behind in my writing...

Oh sorry, Wolf. I forgot you used Wordperfect too. The word counter is under File. Go to File, click Properties, and then there will be a description button under that file. It should show you the words, sentences, paragraphs, and pages....
Rodziel, it sounds like a mix between gothic literature and fantasy. Gothic fantasy... more on this later.

Probably suspense or Fantasy. If the technology/science isn't a major player it's not sci-fi. If the focus isn't the horrific aspect then it's not Horror. I'd have to know more to clasify specifically which Genre it is. Most stories can have ELEMENTS of many different Genres in them it just depends on what the focus is.

Thanks TC.
From the sounds of it I would classify it as fantasy, but like DA said. It is easier with more info and depends on the primary focus....or you could be lazy and class it as other.

It's not the end yet.....I still have 17 hours and 30 minutes to type the last 42,000 words or so. Thank goodness it is a snow day and I don't have work and my daughter doesn't have school. I can write. My current goal is to at least try to reach 10,000. My best friends are probably all going to win this month. One already has. We will have a Thank God It's Over party tomarrow at the start of the unofficial novel editing month. ttyl
