Something happened to me several months ago and just remembered to ask about it.
Ok, I had just come home from a dance recital and went to my room to play my Xbox 360. My brother and cousin were sitting in the living room next door. I had only been home for a bout 20 minutes and all of a sudden my throat started hurting a bit. It felt faintly sore and I didn't know why. Any other person would have written it off as the beginning to a sore throat but I thought the way a Psion would.
The night before I had looked up any article on Empathy and what effects were common to said ability. One thing that was mentioned was that a empath could feel not only emotions of those around them but other physical ailments as well. I sat in my room asking myself whether or not I would ask either of the two in the living room if their throats were sore. I didn't want to be looked at as a weirdo but then something in my mind told me "You've been called weird all your life, what would make this any different? Accept it."
As I came out of the room, my cousin passed by. I asked him whether or not his throat was sore and to my surprise...it was! He claimed it had been hurting prior to me coming home. He asked why and I said "Not long after I came home, my throat started to hurt too." He looked confused and shrugged it off while I thought about what this meant.
The night he left, so did my sore throat.
Was this happenstance or Empathy at work?

Sympathy more than Empathy. As a rather strong Empath, I can tell you that 'sympathy pains' are not as common as some people think. Or more accurately they're not as common a sign of raw empathy. It's usually more common in people who have a natural 'nack' for healing.
The times I have gotten psionic 'sympathy pains' I've usually been looking for something 'wrong' with someone, or it is someone I am very close to, but even that is nothing guarenteed.
Now, I will caveat this with: I have such a large passive range it is quite possible that many of the 'short range' (within the same house hold) effects get washed out by the sheer mental 'volume' of everything else. Secondly, I AM frequently aware of when 'something is wrong' with someone, even if I can't tell specifically what. It could be you are getting more refined data, or your mind interprets the psionic 'pain' physically, and I just tend to recognize psionic input as psionic input and not super impose it on the physical. I don't know for certain.
It's definitely worth keeping an eye on. I'm very much aware that I am not a 'normal' case.
