Who says a flare doesn’t offer SOME protection, or even be a VERY EFFENT method of protection? As I said earlier, I need to (A) be able to flare something, and (B) test it out. Unless someone does conduct experiments, it cannot be said, conclusively, if flaring a shield will be useful, or just an expenditure of energy. -Lancefighter
~off topic?... a little. at least it would be a good use of the D&D section...

Unless an attack is scared of light a flare wouldn't do anything other than possibly create an energy disturbance which might confuse a construct or something. Even given that its definetely not an efficient method of protection since like I said earlier in this thread you wouldn't be able to sustain it for more than a couple seconds, and just doing that would probably take away the majority of your energy.

I think what Lancefighter is implying, Innerfire, is that one cannot know for certain until one performs proper experimentation. You can make an educated guess or hypothesis all you want, but it might be difficult to be 100% sure unless you experiment and come up with legitimate results.

yea, something like that tc. though that energy disturbace you mention might well be a viable method of defence, you know Then again... in a dark area, a bright light would do wonders...

yea, something like that tc. though that energy disturbace you mention might well be a viable method of defence, you know Then again... in a dark area, a bright light would do wonders... A viable method of defense for less than 3 seconds best case scenario, and after that you've used up most of your energy and are mostly defenseless, its quite likely if someone commits to an attack they're going to be prepared to use more than one shot. Tc, some of those cases however the hypothesis is logical enough that testing it would be rediculous. In this case its already been squared away pretty well what would happen given our knowledge of energy consumption, shields, and flaring. If one of you guy's want to test it be my guest, but imo its not worth the time and effort (which like I said earlier in this post would be considerable).

Just because it's not worth the time and effort doesn't mean that making an educated guess is automatically correct. That just means you don't want to go through any experimentation. Innerfire, I agree that flaring might just be a waste of time, I've never tried to flare, and don't really think I'm going to any time soon. Maybe when I've accomplished advanced programming and other such things.
Eh, I'm not sure if I believe that we've "squared away" the effects of flaring upon other constructs, which is the topic. I don't know if anyone here has ever flared successfully, but perhaps we should ask them if there is someone. Maybe they've experimented. The point being is that I don't think we have near enough information to firmly state that flaring does or does not have any effects on other constructs.
If you'd like to pursue this, perhaps taking it to D&D would be more appropriate.

I know a few people who have succeeded in flaring. So far as I can tell from the discussion, the only practical purpose to flaring is if you can find an efficient way to flare enough to provide light to read or see by. Please, correct me if I'm wrong. However, to my knowledge a highly efficient method of flaring has not been discovered and what has been done is relatively dim and requires a lot of energy. I do not see the point in pursuing flaring of anything larger than a psiball unless someone can give me a practical reason I should.
