While going through this last 3 months worth of craziness I noticed several things on a psionic level. Not all of them make sense, not all of them lead to fully pleasant conclusions. Opinions would be welcome.
1) Amidst the expected increased empathic load of a major city and 3000 stressed out soldiers and their trainers, I noticed something about the cities I was in: There was a psionic dampening effect in the city that made it more difficult to make shields and other constructs and made it harder to project past the end of my nose.
2) In this same city I noticed a very, very strong psionic signature, one that's usually trackable to a powerful psion. Except it was not attached to a person. It seemed to be attached to the city itself, not just an amalgym of the individuals within the city a separate signature.
3) This one wasn't happy to see me. Not at all. I spent a good deal of time psionically 'laying low' from it.
4) When we moved to the next city, I noticed a similar effect. An individual signature though this signature was much less malevolent. This one actually seemed to be welcoming. I got a distinct sense of greeting though I don't trust that the conversation wasn't a product of exhaustion and imagination, but I remember a relatively pleasant, if short, telepathic conversation, though it was, again, mostly greetings.
5) Moving to the small town, there was no individual signature for the location. No clue why. The empathic stress levels went back up here as well.
6) Moved to a city in a war zone and noticed something odd. I first thought there was no such signature on that city, which lead me to start concluding the other two had been anomalies. Then I got a tour of a larger area than just the one I'd been in. Once I got out of the immediate area I'd been living in (which, by the way, is blessedly and utterly surprisingly psionically quiet.) the psionic 'noise' came back in full, painful force.
7) Once outside the psionic 'quiet zone' I noticed there was not one but at least TWO distinct 'area signatures'. One of them being responsible for the shielding (for lack of any better term) of the area I live in the other responsible for the rest of the city. There might have been a third but I didn't pick up on on it very clearly and I was too busy keeping overload at bay to go track it down.
There are the major observations. I'm not sure what it all adds up to but it's not a pleasant scinario no matter how I splice things together.

My time right now is kind of cramped and I'll try to come back to this later, but for now, my initial thoughts:
1) I barely have a grip on scanning yet, and I know you're particularly good at it, but is it possible in cases #1/#4 that someone found a way to fool your tracking ability? The dampening effect already indicates that something screwy that is probably intended to mess with psychic functioning was already in place. It doesn't seem too unreasonable that there might be some countermeasure in place to prevent you from tracking the source of the signature. A large city would allow for enough people that one or a couple of them might turn out to be very experienced individuals. The individual theory also makes more sense in that the source of the signature would react to a strong psychic visiting (you) in either a hostile or a welcoming manner.
2) I'm hesitant to go with this second possibility, but there's enough we don't know about psionics to possibly allow it. Especially in large cities there might be some form of collective will that can build up through subtle influences and unconscious communication. I'd have to hash out this theory more to get the mechanics right (perhaps some telepathic individuals in the city could serve as the unconscious conduits for communication in this collective).
While my first point was the best fit for the reactions to you and the existence shielding/dampening fields, the second theory would be the best fit for why the signatures seemed tied to the place and not any particular person. The idea of a collective is kind of interesting, but there's no even small scale thing I've heard of to support that being possible.
I'd think the second explanation I proposed wouldn't be as disturbing as you think, unless someone was identified as being an threat to the collective mind, which would be difficult. Not many people can really gain the true hatred of an entire city, and a significant amount of the collective members would have to feel strongly against a certain target before any action would be taken. However the first explanation proposes the idea that we already have a number of extremely high level psychics asserting control over their "ground." This kind of situation occurring in multiple areas that I assume not all are in contact with each other, suggests a simultaneous trend that is kind of disturbing. I had not considered that we might have this many high level individuals so soon.
More data is still required I think before we can know much for sure. Although you probably already decided to do this, I recommend checking out every new area you approach for these kinds of anomalies.

A collective is possible... though it didn't feel 'collective'. It was singular, and I'm not sure a single psion could spread their signature over a city the size of El Paso and maintain it's integrity and signature with the kind of cohesion I was detecting. #4 lead me to believe that #2 was not so much so a side affect of the dampening field. Given that the first 'city entity' was definitely hostile and picked up on me even while I was laying low. I find the possibility of a collective MORE disturbing not less. The second one (the friendlier one) had more of a feeling of a 'guardian' than anything else. Friendly, but very alert. Not as broody as the other. I'm having some trouble verbalizing what I observed.
The areas in question are about 500 miles appart in the second and third locations, and about 7,000 miles appart in the case of the first and the second. I have been checking them out but very carefully. I wish I could give you more data, but this is what I've got for the moment.

For a second I had the scary thought that the planet may becoming sentient and that it's massive psionic powers will crush us for the things we have done. Then I stopped watching advent children. Then I thought of a scarier thought. What if it WAS a person, a single, fallible human being who actually possessed that much power?
I'd rather not think about that...

I think a person isn't completely out of the question, although they'd have to have a downright scary level of power. The main thing I'm thinking is it has to be human or at least something that interacts with humans, or why would it be centered around cities? What I was trying to say DA, is that someone didn't spread their signature around an entire city but instead made it look like they did somehow. Is that possible? I mean I've toyed with the idea of a kind of "disruption field" where through constructs or just lots of energy particles someone announced themselves so strongly over an area in question that it would become impossible to identify where exactly they were. I think my implementation of that idea is crap, but maybe someone found a way to *actually* do it?

these are things that i typically see in movies and other fictional material. it's scary thinking about it. it's prolly a manifestation of psi energy and embedded in a particular area due to prolonged and/or collective and most likely unintended psychic activity. i wouldnt rule out the idea of 'stuff' manifesting from this thing you call the 'astral realm'. but i'd rather not. it's the stuff of horror movies and scary scenarios in just too many video games, movies, fictional stuff, etc.
p.s. i had an extremely cold shiver down my spine when theDA mentioned 'malevolent'

Who needs psionic "powers" when you have earthquakes, typhoons, volcanoes, hurricanes, twisters, storms, floods, and all of the other good stuff. I personally think its the collective consiousness mindset that pretty much shows expression to all US soldiers as a whole and being sensitive you felt it more. I don't think it was specifically targeting you. I actually don't like being around cities. The reason for this is addition to the individual "noise" of the city, the city has an overall feel or what you can call signature. It is the same with certain places. It is hard to explain, like an overall sentience, if that makes sense (by the way most big cities in America are extremely depressing). I actually experience a dampening affect around certain places. Those places are normally places that clash well with my overall make up. It is hard to explain it is like they numb me down, not like a shield, but more or so like a fog I can't see through. It is hard to feel anything without effort. I hate those places, they make me feel deaf, blind, and dumb. I have noticed that these places are locations that don't suit me. What I mean don't see me are places where my signature and personality are opposite. I have noticed that the overall feelings and thoughts within an area build and build and build until it is something independent. I wouldn't say fully sentient like a person. It actually makes me uncomfortable, as I said before, I don't like being in most places like that due to various personal reasons. Think about how many people are in typical cities (I don't know about the places where you are at). I wouldn't call that disturbing. From my experience it seems to be a common occurance when you have alot of people in one space. I don't see what is disturbing about it. I see what is uncomfortable about it. By the way, I assuming Iraq, but if you are the archetype of something that the area doesn't like, the same principle can be applied. No way, am I trying to see this as fact, this is my experience, my 2 cents, and my opinion.

It could have been a manifestation of the city's importance for the people making decisions about that city? We do need updates i think.. have you tried scanning for similarities between this and other things/people?

DA, i know this is going to sound weird, but i honestly think this may be the case. Try to look into who's in the positions that you are in, because this very well may be the case. I think it may have to do with the peoples positioning, and their intentions. As we all know, this whole earth is energy, and what we describe as light, and radio waves is just a designated name given to that energy, due to the frequency that it is on. SO... the type of person or people that are positioned, or that have current command in the areas that you felt this in may be what is giving off this feeling. I think that their positive or negative feeling may be overlapping into a psionic level causing this "disturbance"... If you have enough people with the same emotional approach towards a certain area, i believe that this may cause a large area to be filled up with their "signature". If the person or people mean peace, then i can imagine that you will feel a sense of welcoming or calmness, versus having a person or people that have no further intention but to cover as much land as possible, and make that their own, destroying everything that is not like them in their paths- well, that would make me feel very unpleasant.
Please correct me if this is not the case, but consider it as a possible reason
