Better that you caught this one than me, Wolf. Let me add a note: If you cannot actually add something of importance or at the very least of interest and relevance to a thread that has been dead for this long... 4 going on 5 months now, please refrain from commenting on it. I'm a great deal more critical than Wolf is, especially here. It's part of my job.
Consider this a friendly warning to the new people on the site. Things can and do heat up here VERY quickly. Just come prepared and think your posts through and you should be fine. But my job is to find the holes in theories and drive battleships through them if they fit. I do NOT want to scare anyone off, I just want you to be aware of how things work here so you're not going 'why are you coming down so hard on me?'

I think you don't need to be scared of those psi games we do on chat (DA and Wolfdancer, shut me up if I'm wrong) , I mean Shields are for protecting you from that kind of stuff aren't they?
And for the record, it's not what those chats are for, their purpose is for helping people...sometimes (like said) there's even games!

If the automatic response of a chat room is to immediately start messing with someone new in the Chat, it is not a chat room that should be gone to. ANYONE pulls that sort of thing on me and I will defend myself, and shields are NOT my only means of defense. Frankly if psionic assault is the way a chatroom works there is something WRONG and it's probably not a place you want to open yourself up enough to actually learn from the malicious morons who instigate such a policy.
Why are they morons: Lack of sense. A great many people can't defend themselves when they go on such chats... Then someone like me gets into the chat and the assailants are frequently left hurting much worse than they like.
We are not talking about polite games where invitations are extended BEFORE anything is done. I have been to chats and websites where I have been blatantly attacked within seconds of my screen name popping in. It is one reason I have not gone to UPC in a very long time and will not visit their chats. I have neither the time nor the inclination to play that kind of cat and mouse games with people who are too stupid to realize you don't go out and pick random fights with people in the psionic equivalent of a Bar. You may wind up getting into a fist fight with a professional boxer.
Most of the chats that advocate that kind of behavior help NO ONE.

In UPC's defense that's not a common occurence as far as I've seen and it's not advocated. It shouldn't be happening, if someone launches an unprovoked attack perhaps consider reporting it to the people that run the site.

I know this thread is heavily de-railed, but I felt I should post on this one in my attempt to be an actual webmaster : P
In many cases, not just at UPC, reports of abuse get swept under the rug. Think about it. A non-usual person comes into the room. A prominent member decides "Hey, I don't like this person, lets attack 'um." Now, let's assume the new person complains. Two things could possibly happen:
The staff holds everyone to the same standard and holds an investigation into the matter and finds that the prominent member was out of line and takes action.
Or the more probable:
The staff was probably either involved, or at least knew about it, but because they play favorites or happen to know the prominent member rather well, they dont do anything about it. Perhaps that person has been there for a long time. They'll ignore the complaint because they do not want to risk alienating such a long time member, or perhaps because they even agree with what he/she was doing.
Now, am I saying this happens at UPC? No, I'm not saying that it does or doesn't, because I dont know. Does it happen here? No, and I can only tell you that because I run the place. But I do know that it does happen.
Anyway, that's my contribution to this massive derailment lol.
